"CNN Heroes 2009... CNN is searching the globe for people whose selflessness, dedication and achievement are as inspiring as the CNN heroes we have honored in the 2008."
To answer CNN, Our Lady's Cathedral has nominated Sister Barbara Joseph Foley (Sister B.J.) as our CNN HERO. She more than matches these attributes. Sister has been nominated in the category of "Protecting the Powerless."
CNN asked several questions regarding nominees. For our nominee, these were very easy to answer.
Is there a specific incident or turning point that motivated your nominee to take action?
In 1990, Sister Barbara Joseph Foley was a California girl with a secure job and a fast sports car. It wasn't enough. She longed for greater purpose--she wanted to be a nun. In 1996, at 42, she took vows with Oklahoma City's Carmelite Sisters of St. Therese, one of only five such orders that is not cloistered. Ten years into her new vocation Sister Barbara Joseph made a second vow-to serve the homeless people she saw around her. With no funds and a couple of volunteers, the Pantry was born solely of her belief in every person's God-given dignity.
Sister Barbara Joseph will be honored November 12, 2009 at a banquet in Connor Center.
