The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden Print E-mail

ImageGod, the Loving Father, speaks sadly and justly to Adam and Eve, humanity's parents, after they have eaten from the forbidden Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Believing that they could be like God, they have committed the first sin of pride. God addresses the serpent, the agent of their downfall: I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall crush your head and you will strike at his heel. (Genesis 3.15)

The earliest writers in the Church understood this saying to be a prophecy and a promise by God to send God's Only Begotten One, the Son, into the world to combat the powers of evil.  In Mary, the Mother of Jesus, God announced his plan to overcome pride by humility.  Following St. Paul's claim that Jesus Christ was the New Adam (1 Corinthians 15.45), they called Mary the New Eve. Mary cooperated intimately with God who brings about through her Son Jesus the restoration of the life of grace.  What Adam and Eve lost, Jesus recovers.
