Embracing Our Call to Holiness
The "Embracing Our Call to Holiness" campaign for spiritual development is an initiative by the Cathedral to focus on and foster holiness within our community. Through this campaign, the Cathedral is making a deliberate investment in nurturing the growth and support of all people and ministries, with the goal of accompanying each person on their journey toward holiness. By inspiring people to embrace our shared calling to holiness, we hope to transform hearts and lead lives grounded in love, humility, and sincere worship.
Mission
A welcoming faith community guiding all in our journey to know, love, and serve God.
Vision
Through the intercession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, we aspire to be beacons of hope through works of mercy, a diverse community, and reverent celebrations of sacred liturgy, empowering all to embrace our call to holiness.
History
Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish was established in 1919 by Oklahoma's first Bishop, Theophile Meerschaert, with Monsignor Albert Monnot appointed as Pastor on January 16, 1919. Covering an expansive area of eighty square miles, the parish was tasked with serving the northwest expansion of Oklahoma City.
In May 1919, twelve men dedicated two days to construct a temporary wooden church building on recently acquired property, located between Northwest 31st and 32nd Streets, and from Western to Lake Avenue. After four years of holding Masses in the school, construction of the Church began on July 3, 1923. The final brick was laid in February 1924, completing the construction of the Cathedral, which was shortly thereafter dedicated.
In order to escape the political unrest in their native country, Vietnamese refugees fled their country in the mid 1970s. By July 1975, Our Lady’s had become home to thirty Vietnamese families who were seeking refuge from religious as well as political persecution. With the arrival of more refugees, the ministry to the Vietnamese community expanded and has been a very important and integral part of the parish ever since.
With its long legacy of being the Mother Church for all Catholics Our Lady's Cathedral continues to thrive as a welcoming and beautiful space for daily worship and serves as the primary venue for numerous events hosted by the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City.
History About Prayer: In 2015, an initiative was launched by the Cathedral's Office of Evangelization, led by Faith Reilly, and the Spiritual Life Board to create a prayer as a means of interceding for the needs of the Cathedral.
